In most of these cases, these are one-of-a-kind creations that are commissioned by the patron for an artist to make by hand. These offerings are a way for people to take their digital images (which often just live on their hard-drives and are rarely accessed) and give them greater importance, permanence, and perhaps new meaning through a new medium.

I’m not sure this is the best advice. Just because you’re new doesn’t mean you have to slave away for low wages. Low price doesn’t always sell more. And selling low but in quantity doesn’t equal profit. Look at Etsy as proof of that. There are a lot of intangibles that need to be considered, and the art has to hold up right from the outset. While of course there will be some trial and error, and I agree in never going backwards on price, a thorough study of your target market will pay bigger rewards than slapping things out for a low price. That’s more likely to pigeonhole you as a low cost artist – and that can be more detrimental to someone just starting out.

Quite Cool! I just released a simple app (for Android and iPhone/iPad/iWhatever) that recreates a selected photo with artwork elements selected by the user. It’s called Pixeroid and you can take a quick look at some user submitted “pixeroids” at http://pixeroid.com We are about to release an update with high res output (for now it’s 1024×768), more artwork and speed improvements.
